 Verb Mistakes & Confusions

ইংরেজি শেখার পথে সবচেয়ে বেশি হোঁচট লাগে verbs নিয়ে—tense বদল, form নির্বাচন, preposition লাগানো, gerund/infinitive—সবখানেই ছোট ভুল বড় সমস্যা তৈরি করে। এখানে rule-wise, সহজ ভাষায়, ভুল-সঠিক উদাহরণসহ সম্পূর্ণ গাইড দিলাম।

Subject–Verb Agreement (একমাত্রা মিল)

রুল: Present Simple-এ he/she/it + verb+s/es।

  1. She walk to college every morning. Ans: She walks to college every morning.
    কেন: singular subject হলে verb-এ s/es লাগে।
  2. The cat chase the bird.Ans:The cat chases the bird.
  3. My brother and cousin is here.Ans:My brother and cousin are here.

“to” এর পরে Base Form (Infinitive basics)

রুল: to + base verb (went/seen/studied নয়)।

  1. I plan to went early.Ans: I plan to go early.
  2. She hopes to passes the exam.Ans: She hopes to pass the exam.
  3. They promised to helped me.Ans:They promised to help me.

Past vs Present (সময় না মিললে সমস্যা)

রুল: yesterday/last year/in 2020 = past verb।

  1. Yesterday we eat outside.Ans:Yesterday we ate outside.
  2. In 2019 he is in Sylhet.Ans:In 2019 he was in Sylhet.
  3. Last week I see that film.Ans:Last week I saw that film.

Past Simple ≠ Past Participle (went vs gone)

রুল: নির্দিষ্ট past-time থাকলে simple past, perfect নয়।

  1. ×I have gone there yesterday.Ans: I went there yesterday.
  2. ×She has eaten lunch an hour ago.Ans: She ate lunch an hour ago.
  3. ×They had seen the play last Friday.Ans: They saw the play last Friday.

Double Negative (দুই “না” একসাথে নয়)

রুল: এক বাক্যে একটাই negative রাখুন।

  1. He doesn’t want nothing.Ans:He doesn’t want anything.
  2. We can’t find no seat.Ans:We can’t find any seat.
  3. She hasn’t got no time.Ans:She hasn’t got any time.

Stative Verb + Continuous (সাথে যায় না)

রুল: know, believe, like, own, belong—সাধারণত -ing নেয় না।

  1. I am knowing the rules now.Ans:I know the rules now.
  2. They are believing you.Ans:They believe you.
  3. She is owning two flats.Ans: She owns two flats.

“did” + Base Form (পুনরাবৃত্ত past নয়)

রুল: did থাকলে মূল verb base।

  1. I did finished the task.Ans: I did finish the task.
  2. He did went home.Ans: He did go home.
  3. They did helped us.Ans: They did help us.

has vs have (একবচন/বহুবচন)

  1. She have two phones.Ans: She has two phones.
  2. My parents has a plan.Ans:My parents have a plan.
  3. The team have won the cup. (BrE exceptions aside) → Ans: The team has won the cup.

was vs were (past be-forms)

  1. You was late.Ans:You were late.
  2. They was upset.Ans: They were upset.
  3. He were happy.Ans: He was happy.

Gerund vs Infinitive (enjoy/suggest/avoid)

রুল: enjoy/suggest/avoid/finish + verb-ing।

  1. I enjoy to read at night.Ans: I enjoy reading at night.
  2. She suggested to leave early.Ans: She suggested leaving early.
  3. They avoided to answer.Ans:They avoided answering.

Time Clause-এ Future নয়

রুল: when/before/after/until/as soon as → present, main clause-এ future।

  1. I will call you when I will arrive.Ans: I will call you when I arrive.
  2. Wait here until he will finish.Ans: Wait here until he finishes.
  3. We’ll start after she will come.Ans:We’ll start after she comes.

Past Perfect (had+V3) কখন?

রুল: দুটি past action—আগেরটা had+V3। একটাই past হলে simple past।

  1. I had reached home yesterday at 9.Ans:I reached home yesterday at 9.
  2. Ans:By the time the train arrived, we had bought the tickets.
  3. Ans:She had finished dinner before the guests came.

Transitive Verb + extra preposition (ফালতু preposition নয়)

discuss/describe/request/order → direct object, about/for নয়।

  1. We discussed about the issue.Ans: We discussed the issue.
  2. He described about the scene.Ans: He described the scene.
  3. She requested for an extension.Ans: She requested an extension.

Confusing Pairs (borrow/lend, say/tell, do/make)

  1. borrow (ধার নেওয়া) / lend (ধার দেওয়া)
    I borrowed him 500 taka.Ans:I lent him 500 taka.
  2. say (কিছু বলা) / tell (কাউকে বলা)
    She said me the news.Ans: She told me the news.
  3. do (কাজ করা) / make (তৈরি করা/ঘটানো)
    He did a mistake.Ans:He made a mistake.

Verb + Preposition (micro-traps)

  1. ask to meAns:ask me / Ans: ask for help /Ans: ask about prices
  2. attend to the classAns: attend the class
  3. arrive to the airportAns:arrive at the airport / Ans: arrive in Dhaka

Irregular Spelling (Cambridge-style pitfalls)

  1. She joind last month.Ans: She joined last month.
  2. The show begun at 8.Ans: The show began at 8.
  3. The baby cryed all night.Ans: The baby cried all night.

Modal Basics (must/can/should…)

  1. He must to leave now.Ans: He must leave now.
  2. We can to swim.Ans: We can swim.
  3. You should to rest.Ans:You should rest.

Passive Voice-এ auxiliary লাগবেই

  1. The report submitted yesterday.Ans: The report was submitted yesterday.
  2. The house painted last week.Ans: The house was painted last week.
  3. Ans:The food is cooked by my mother.

Sense/Ownership verbs continuous নয়

  1. I am hearing a beep. (general perception) → Ans: I hear a beep.
  2. They are owning this café.Ans: They own this café.
  3. We are belonging to that group.Ans:We belong to that group.

rise/raise (intransitive vs transitive)

  1. He rised his hand.Ans:He raised his hand.
  2. Ans:The sun rises at six.
  3. Ans:They raised the price last week.

lie/lay (এটাই সবচেয়ে tricky)

  1. lie (শোয়া): lie–lay–lain
  2. lay (রাখা): lay–laid–laid
  3. He lied on the sofa. (means ‘told a lie’) → Ans: He lay on the sofa.
  4. She layed the keys here.Ans: She laid the keys here.

bring/take (দিক নির্ভর)

  1. Ans:Bring it here, please. (এদিকে আনো)
  2. Ans:Take this to your room. (ওদিকে নিয়ে যাও)
  3. Please take it here.Ans:Please bring it here.

say/tell/speak/talk (fine-tuned use)

say = content; tell = person + content; speak = language/ formal talk; talk = casual conversation

  1. She said me to wait.Ans:She told me to wait.
  2. He can talks English well.Ans:He can speak English well.
  3. Ans:They were talking to each other.

come/go (listener-centric)

  1. I’m going to your place now (listener at home) → Ans: I’m coming to your place now.
  2. Come to school tomorrow (listener won’t be there) → Ans: Go to school tomorrow.

look forward to + V-ing

  1. I look forward to meet you.Ans:I look forward to meeting you.
  2. Ans:We’re looking forward to seeing the new campus.
  3. Ans:She looks forward to working abroad.

used to (past habits)

  1. Ans:I used to cycle to school.
  2. I didn’t used to like tea.Ans:I didn’t use to like tea.
  3. Did you used to live here?Ans: Did you use to live here?

affect (verb) / effect (noun)

  1. The decision effected our plan.Ans:The decision affected our plan.
  2. Ans:The new policy had a positive effect on sales.
  3. Ans:How will this change affect customers?
  4. since vs for (present perfect family)
  5. Ans:I have known her for five years. (সময়কাল)
  6. Ans:He has lived here since 2021. (শুরুর সময়)
  7. I have waited for Monday.Ans: I have waited since Monday.

do vs make (duty vs create)

  1. Ans:Do the laundry, do research, do business.
  2. Ans:Make a cake, make a plan, make progress.
  3. He did a mistake.Ans: He made a mistake.

learn vs teach (ভূমিকা আলাদা)

  1. Can you learn me Maths?Ans:Can you teach me Maths?
  2. Ans:I’m learning French this semester.
  3. Ans:She teaches Biology at the college.

hear vs listen (অনিচ্ছাকৃত vs মনোযোগ)

  1. Ans:I hear music from next door. (শুনতে পাচ্ছি)
  2. Ans:I listen to podcasts at night. (মন দিয়ে শুনি)
  3. I listen a noise.Ans: I hear a noise.

Indirect questions/reporting (that-free ‘wh’)

  1. She asked that where I was going.Ans:She asked where I was going.
  2. Ans:He asked if we had finished.
  3. Ans:Rahul asked whether he could leave.
