What Is Pronoun Reference?
যখন কোনো সর্বনাম (যেমন— he, she, it, they, this, that, which ইত্যাদি) স্পষ্টভাবে জানায় না যে সেটি কোন বিশেষ্যকে নির্দেশ করছে, তখন তাকে বলা হয় Unclear Pronoun Reference বা অস্পষ্ট সর্বনাম নির্দেশ।
How Pronoun Reference Works
A pronoun (যেমন — he, she, it, they) noun-এর জায়গায় বসে একই শব্দ বারবার না বলার জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Example:
The old man smiled as he listened to the marching band.
Here, he is the pronoun, and the old man is its antecedent.
“He” শব্দটি “the old man”-এর পরিবর্তে এসেছে, তাই “the old man” হলো antecedent।
Rules to Ensure Correct Pronoun Reference
- Each student must bring his or her pen. (not their pen)
Common Errors in Pronoun Reference (সাধারণ ভুলসমূহ)
Vague or Ambiguous Reference
- Incorrect: Jane told Ruth that she had to leave. (Who had to leave—Jane or Ruth?)
- Correct: Jane told Ruth, “You have to leave.” or Jane told Ruth that Jane had to leave.
No Antecedent (Antecedent
- Incorrect: On the news, it said the president died.
- Correct: The news reported that the president died.
Incorrect Agreement (সঙ্গতির ভুল)
- Incorrect: Samin and Sara were standing by the glass door drinking a cup of tea when it broke. “It” বলতে কী ভাংলো —glass door না cup of tea?
- Correct: Samin and Sara were standing by the glass door drinking tea when the cup broke.
